Uruguay itineraries
Uruguay road trips for 3, 5 and 7 days: itinerary ideas
Uruguay looks small on a map, but covering too many regions in a short trip can turn the holiday into driving and check-ins. Better itineraries usually choose one geographic axis —western river, Atlantic coast, hills or thermal region— and leave enough time for walking, food and each overnight base.
Three days: one region and no more than two bases
Three days work well for Montevideo plus Colonia, Maldonado plus Piriápolis, northern Rocha around Barra del Chuy and Punta del Diablo, or a hill-country break through Minas and Villa Serrana. If arrival is late on day one, a single base often produces a better trip than changing accommodation nightly.
Five days: combine two compatible experiences
Five days can connect Montevideo, Colonia and wineries or Maldonado with several Rocha stops. Another option is an inland trip through Villa Serrana, Florida and rural experiences. Avoid combining the Atlantic coast and thermal west unless driving itself is part of the objective.
Seven days: full coast or thermal west
A week allows a calmer route through Montevideo, Maldonado and Rocha with two or three bases. It also supports a western itinerary through Colonia, Fray Bentos, Paysandú and hot springs, though distances grow. Two-night stays in activity-rich places are usually better than moving luggage daily.
