3 days in Montevideo
Montevideo in 3 days: neighborhoods, waterfront and culture
Three days are enough to understand Montevideo when outings are grouped geographically. A strong first visit dedicates one day to downtown and Ciudad Vieja, another to the waterfront and coastal neighborhoods, and a third to Prado, markets or museums according to interests. This reduces transport time and leaves room for food, walking and spontaneous stops.
Day 1: downtown, Plaza Independencia and Ciudad Vieja
Plaza Independencia, Palacio Salvo, Teatro Solís and pedestrian Sarandí form a walkable route toward Plaza Matriz, museums, Mercado del Puerto and the port waterfront. Starting early and selecting only a few interiors keeps the day realistic. When the trip matches Sábados en Ciudad Vieja, the historic district adds cultural, food and street activities.
Day 2: Rambla, Pocitos and Punta Carretas
The Rambla explains much of Montevideo’s relationship with the Río de la Plata. Pocitos, Punta Carretas and Parque Rodó work well as connected coastal areas, with public transport helping across longer sections. A good day mixes waterfront walking, one relaxed meal and time in parks or cafés rather than constantly moving between landmarks.
Day 3: Prado, markets and a local experience
The third day can focus on Prado, the Botanical Garden and green spaces, or on markets such as Mercado Agrícola de Montevideo. Another option is to spend more time on museums, candombe or neighborhoods missed earlier. One major activity plus one secondary area usually creates a deeper first visit than crossing the city repeatedly.
