Surfing in Uruguay
Surfing in Uruguay: top beaches and spots in Rocha and Maldonado
Uruguay’s Atlantic coast has a strong concentration of surf spots, especially in Rocha and Maldonado. Between La Paloma and Santa Teresa, numerous beaches face different directions and have different bottoms, making it possible to search for changing wind and swell conditions. Difficulty varies by beach and by day, so local knowledge matters.
La Paloma, La Pedrera and Cabo Polonio
La Paloma has several beaches with different orientations, increasing the chance of finding suitable waves as wind and sea conditions shift. La Pedrera is associated with more powerful waves at places such as El Barco and El Desplayado. Cabo Polonio adds national-park logistics and special access that should be planned separately from a casual beach visit.
Punta del Diablo, Santa Teresa and Maldonado
Punta del Diablo offers different wave profiles at La Viuda, Rivero and the bay, while Santa Teresa adds several beaches within a natural setting. Farther west, La Barra, Manantiales and other Maldonado coast areas also attract surfers. The best base depends on level, transport, services and how much driving you want to do in search of conditions.
Accommodation and safety for surf trips
A property with board storage, an outdoor shower, parking and reasonable access to multiple spots can be more useful than staying directly in front of one beach. Conditions change quickly and not every break suits beginners. Local schools and surfers are valuable for understanding currents, bottoms and safer entry points.
