Uruguay lighthouses
Uruguay lighthouse route: Cabo Polonio, La Paloma and more
Lighthouses reveal Uruguay’s coast through navigation, history, geography and scenery, often occupying some of the best viewpoints along the shoreline. Cabo Polonio and Cabo Santa María in La Paloma are major Rocha references, while Punta del Este and other maritime landmarks extend the route toward Maldonado and the Río de la Plata.
Rocha: Cabo Polonio and Cabo Santa María
Cabo Polonio combines its lighthouse with islands, sea lions and a national park reached through special access, requiring more planning than a roadside stop. In La Paloma, Cabo Santa María fits more easily into a town stay with the harbor, beaches and Rocha Lagoon. Official visiting and climbing hours should be confirmed.
Maldonado and the Río de la Plata
Punta del Este lighthouse belongs naturally within a walking route through the peninsula and harbor. Farther west, other coastal landmarks can extend the theme into a longer journey. Interior access is not permanent at every lighthouse, so architecture, views and maritime history may be the main experience.
Turning lighthouses into a travel route
Rather than rushing through many sites, use two or three lighthouses as anchors for a coastal route with overnight stops. Rocha and Maldonado can combine Cabo Polonio, La Paloma and Punta del Este, while Colonia can extend the journey west along the Río de la Plata.
