Sport fishing
Sport fishing in Uruguay: rivers, lagoons and destinations
Uruguay offers sport fishing across rivers, streams, reservoirs, lagoons and coastal waters, with very different settings between the western river region, Río Negro and the east. Trips can range from shore fishing to guided boat outings and should be planned around species, season, technique and current regulations.
Western region, Guichón and the Uruguay River
Paysandú and surrounding areas are known for techniques such as baitcasting, spinning and fly fishing, with species including dorado and tararira in suitable habitats. Guichón combines fishing with nature and hot springs, while Bella Unión adds a border landscape. Always confirm licenses, closed seasons, size rules and catch-and-release recommendations before fishing.
Río Negro, reservoirs and river beaches
San Gregorio de Polanco, Mercedes and other Río Negro areas provide a different fishing landscape of reservoirs, islands and broad open water. Wind, flow and water level can change conditions quickly, making local knowledge and the right boat especially useful. Life jackets and weather checks should be considered basic planning rather than optional extras.
Choosing accommodation for a fishing trip
For early starts and late returns, location often matters more than luxury. Parking, secure equipment storage, kitchen or freezer access, easy water access and the ability to coordinate a guide can shape the trip. Rural and riverside areas also require checking fuel, phone signal and nearby stores before arrival.
