Whales in La Paloma
Whale watching in La Paloma: season, viewpoints and tips
La Paloma is one of Rocha’s strongest places for observing southern right whales from shore. The official season runs from July through October, and natural viewpoints and platforms make it possible to wait for sightings without chasing animals. The experience fits naturally into a winter or spring trip and does not require a boat.
When whale season happens and what to expect
Southern right whales reach the Uruguayan coast during winter and spring, with the recognized season running from July to October. Sightings are never guaranteed because wild animal behavior, sea state and visibility vary. Multiple short viewing sessions over a stay are more realistic than building the entire trip around a single hour.
Cerro de la Virgen, Los Botes and other viewpoints
Cerro de la Virgen between La Aguada and Costa Azul is highlighted by Rocha tourism as a natural whale viewpoint and includes a platform and seating. Cristo de Lucho at Los Botes is another marine-wildlife observation point. Binoculars and patient observation usually work better than driving constantly along the coast looking for an immediate sighting.
Responsible whale watching
Shore-based observation lets travelers enjoy migration without interfering with whale behavior. Drones, improvised boats and actions that chase animals should be avoided. A two- or three-night stay can combine viewpoints with the lighthouse, harbor, beaches and food, so the trip remains worthwhile even if whales are not visible on a particular day.
